Since leaving Brown, I have stuck to one specialty – elementary education – but in more than one form. First, I worked in inner city public schools teaching regular education and English as a Second Language. I also worked at an international school in Quito, Ecuador while I was studying Spanish. Later, I received my Masters in Education from Teachers College at Columbia University, and I completed my school administration certification.
For the past eight years, I have worked at home caring for the five children that I have with my German-American husband, Patrick Käufer. The kids are Liam, Hannah, Cicely, Carl and Quinn. I feel lucky that I am still accumulating professional experience even though I have chosen to stay at home. It is hard to imagine a time in my life when my kids will not need me but during back-to-school season each September, I yearn to be at the head of a classroom or school again. For now, when I seek conversation that is more stimulating than the daily “What’s for dinner?” grind, I dedicate myself to volunteer projects such as my work for Brown.
